My Fiat 600 was always great fun. I never knew when or if I would get to work. Last week an Italian chef looked at me with a big smile and said, without any help from me, FIAT -- Fix it again, Tony. My godfather, Dante Santacroce -- now there's a name -- was more religious. He underlined "Fiat" in his missal (Fiat voluntas tua).

My Fiat's doors hinged at the back. No, I was never killed.

The Fiat 600 was a fun car when speed was not all it mattered. Would love it with the sunroof.

One thing is clear in my mind: The bad guys drive SUVs, the good guys drive FIAT.

I would guess that the people who drive in cities in SUVs, vans, and trucks must feel safer in them. I can remember wishing I could drive a battered old bread delivery van and just let the aggressive bastards around San Francisco bounce off the van without my taking any notice of them.

Drivers are bad in most places. I once lived in Gulfport, Mississippi, back before Highway 90 was replaced by I-10. I was sure I could fix highway 90 by just driving up and down the road in a tank for a week or so. I wouldn't run anyone down, I'd just let everybody else try to run me down as usual.

I guess you don't want to drive a Fiat 600 in that environment. Not even a modern small cars with all the safety features.

I agree that driving some kind of big vehicle gives you space and respect on the road. Such is life in the jungle.
