I could tell it was contact dermatitis, and not gangrene, because the rash didn't go beyond the top of my socks, and it was absent in places where the socks didn't rub against the skin. But the academic medical discussions on the Web covered every topic under the sun but socks. Then I came upon a clothing manufacturer who said, "Hey, it's the damned elastic in the socks. Some of these modern materials like Spandex are not good for sensitive immune systems." They said to buy socks that are 100% cotton. (That's 100% algodón, if you live in Miami.) I'll go barefoot for awhile, just to see if they're right.

My feet are better now, thank you. But it was too cold to go barefoot with the damned air conditioning running all the time (not my idea at all). The last time I went barefoot all the time there wasn't any air conditioning. So I found an old pair of British socks made of God knows material that contain no modern, immune system destroying elastic. One sock has a hole in the heel, which will do nicely for air conditioning.
